Superstars: Heroin and Hollywood

Almost daily we hear on news channels like E, shows like TMZ and main stream media about another celebrity superstar who is being affected by heroin and has died from an overdose. Most recently, the musician, Prince most noted for, Purple Rain. I didn't want it to be true but before they released the news I just knew we would hear that it was overdose related.

How many times have we heard about another celebrity who has
lost their lives to drugs and overdose? In years past Hollywood often tried to keep this a secret or cover it up.

In todays world, pop culture and the paparazzi everywhere that isn't easy to do. It is becoming more common to hear about celebrities affected and celebrities on trial and for many of them their addiction to drugs has affected their work on the big screen. Hollywood almost has a double standard doesn't it? For as many celebrities lost to drugs there are as many movies about heroin and drugs.

Do you remember in the 90's when the Heroin Chic fashion was in and all the rage? Calvin Klein came out with fashion line and look? Who was the heroin chic? Kate Moss.

Heroin infiltrated pop culture through attention brought to addictions in the early 1990s. In film, the heroin chic trend in fashion coincided with a string of movies in the mid‑1990s about heroin—such as The Basketball Diaries, Trainspotting, Kids, Permanent Midnight, and Pulp Fiction—that examined heroin use and drug culture (Heroin Chic Fashion)

In 1997 after the heroin overdose of a prominent fashion photographer then President Bill Clinton came out speaking against the fashion industry calling it, deplorable.

Who would have thought just nineteen years later we would be right here where we are today in this heroin epidemic? That we would have to be out advocating against just to save lives like a race against time.

Years ago I had someone tell me, "Well Britney Murphy does it." Just because someone else does it doesn't mean others have to do it. Reminds me of that old adage my mom used to say, "Well if everyone jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?"

Kids today seem to be impressionable like that though. Kids today seem to be bored and looking for ways to curb that boredom. Kids today spend too much time on their devices- their I-everything technology. We need way more awareness, especially in this town.
